Illustration Friday - "Sacrifice"

This week's Illustration Friday topic, "Sacrifice," evokes strong emotions in me. The first idea that came to me was to draw Jesus, and then later on I remembered this concept, which I first thought of about 7 years ago when I first started to learn sign language. The sign for "I Love You" or "ILY" is the combination of the finger-shapes for the letters "I" "L" and "Y." I wanted to show Jesus' crucified hand on the cross, with his fingers forming the sign, "I love you," to the viewer. I sketched this out in a diary back then, but I didn't feel I could draw it the way I imagined it. I'm happy with this portrayal, and I hope my Deaf friends like it as much as I do.

Drawn in black Micron pen, Prismacolor markers and colored pencils in my sketchbook.

Great--awesome--beautiful illustration. Hey, I almost used the same verse for mine. :) Love it!

Very nice. I liked it when it looked like 'just' a hand. But, the formation of ILY just makes it perfect.

Really nice job on this....excellent rendering of the hand and I love the tie in with sign language. Overall a totally successful piece! To answer your previous question, I grew up in the south in North Carolina. My grandparents farm was in southwestern Virginia, in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Such great memories!

I love the visual perspective, and I got the sign language right away, before reading your text. Really powerful, and well done.

This would be an awesome gift framed regardless if it were for someone familiar with the Deaf community or not.
Almost made me cry to look at it.
Wonderful drawing as well as meaningful.
